Kai Ryssdal interviewed the CEO of Fannie Mae for this article, which offers some great insight into just what Fannie Mae does.  In short, Fannie Mae is one of the key players that makes the mortgage market work.  The article also describes how the 2008 financial crisis changed Fannie Mae.  Remember that in September 2008 the government had to bail out this company to the tune of $11 Billion?  I certainly do – I was at Atlantic Beach when I heard the news.  Well, did you know that Fannie Mae has paid all that back, and almost $50 billion more?
